1/28/09 HipHop2099.com Exclusive Interview 2099: Let me get right to it, Your Album is Entitled Killakingdom,is there anything you can share in regards to why you chose this name how it came about? T.h.o.t: I originally was working on an album very different than this, it was poetic and very much a personal album. I stopped working on it about 6 years ago, after stumbling upon an old demo of mine.The song on it had cuts from an old album by The Roots, two samples in particular "The dark one fearsome slum son..Hustle in a Killakingdom." I decided Killakingdom was a perfect title to help fulfill my purpose. 2099:Purpose? Is Killakingdom meant to be more than just an album? T.h.o.t: Is any song meant to be just a song? In my opinion if any artist says so they don't deserve their skill. 2099: What do you mean exactly? T.h.o.t: I mean you don't load a gun up with feathers, I see a world in darkness, and in that darkness being able to shed a light is as much an honor as a burden.This is not a time for dancing if you dance in darkness sooner or later you'll fall. 2099: Are you criticizing any artist in particular? T.h.o.t: Yes & no. The time on my handz is not sufficient to be wasted on one artist. Im not out to get fame for mocking someone else. Whatever the reason you might "make it" wether its who you know, charisma, skill, etc, we shouldn't waste our talents.We will all be held accountable sooner or later....but not by me. 2099: So what are you out for? T.h.o.t: To inspire. To send a message. A real message. 2099: Ok, lets keep it moving. What is your opinion on Hip hop today? T.h.o.t: Im not really a big fan. I think its stuck, it formulaic and decadent. I mostly listen to old school, Tribe called quest, Pharcyde, some newer artist like Kweli, Mos & so on. 2099: Thats funny you don't sound like any of those artist you mentioned. T.h.o.t: Am I supposed to? Imitation isn't a strong suit of mine. Im so busy on what Im trying to do that Im not looking left or right, Im focused on what Im doing and the more you focus on your own work the less you have to worry about others around you. 2099: Killakingdom is a very dark sounding album title, is it? T.h.o.t: Its meant to be, but I held back in order to go in different directions, there are even songs I cut out. It should've been a double c.d., but its probably best it isn't, since its my Debut. 2099: So what? Are we looking for a sequel in the future? T.h.to: Yes. The sequel will be alot darker, more hype and intense than the first. 2099: What did you mean by going in different directions? T.h.o.t: I mean, Killakingdom's songs are very diverse,as I intended in order to appeal to more people. You have poetic songs, hype songs, slower songs etc. I did so to showcase my ability of diversity without compromising my beliefs or overall style. 2099: Did you really do EVERYTHING? T.h.o.t: Yes, at first out of necessity and then it just became a part of me. The will to learn, to truly be independent and have a Label that is self sufficient. My label does not rely on any secondary companies for help on virtually any premise. 2099: Who is Kathy? What can you tell us about her? She is a very talented singer. Her talent is very raw, She has no vocal training and yet she is very skillful. She came on as a favor to me for "Tyrany's Tearz" and it worked so well she made her way to other songs. Some were unfortunately cut and one in particular called "Fly",wasn't meant to feature her and it ended up being her song. 2099: How did that happen? T.h.o.t: She was tired of listening to me explain what I wanted on one song, and she says to me play another beat for me, I don't like this one. Within an hour Fly was written and recorded. 2099: Are you looking to sign artist? T.h.o.t: That depends on the length of my success. I am always open to collabs, and am currently talking to another amazing singer on a possible signing. Its not my priority right now, but I do see myself scouting later down the road. 2099: What is the song "Hustle" really about is it directed toward someone in particular? T.h.o.t: In its entirety it is not but there are portions directed to some people from my past, but they are not worth mentioning by names. At least not at this Time. 2099: Any thoughts on winning the Future award? T.h.o.t: Im very honored and content that there are still sites that support & recognize real talent such as Hiphop2099.com 2099: Well we look forward to more interviews in the future!
